Helen Lewis Caldwell was born on
March 31, 1920 in Plano, Kentucky. She was the daughter of
the late J. Heber Lewis and the late Ruth Upton Lewis of
Burnside, KY. She married Orian Clyde Caldwell Jr., a Navy
Pilot, on April 17, 1942, and he preceded her in death, a
casualty of World War II. Helen Caldwell, 91, departed
this life on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the
Neighborhood of Somerset Nursing Facility.
Helen Caldwell was
educated in Burnside Grade School, Sayre School, and
Western Kentucky University. She had a long career in
public education beginning in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and
ending her career in Fort Myers, Florida as the Science
Coordinator for Lee County Schools. After retirement, she
had more time to enjoy her love of sports especially golf
and tennis. She was also a gifted writer and published CrossVine
on the Cumberland in 1998.
Besides her parents,
husband, and brother, Robert T. Lewis, she was also
preceded in death by her only child, Orian Clyde Caldwell
III, in 1984 and her granddaughter, Catherine Anne
Caldwell, who died in 2011.
She is survived by her
grandson, Orian Clyde Caldwell IV (Chip) and his wife
Trisha and their two children, Qwenton and Sofie of
Littleton, Colorado; great-granddaughter, Megan Nichole
Caldwell, and daughter-in-law, DeeGee Caldwell Stephens.
Other survivors
include two nieces, Mary Helen (Roy) Harney of
Nicholasville, Kentucky and Jeanne (Tom) Gaskin of
Bronston, Kentucky; two nephews, William C. (Kathy) Lewis
and Dickie (Tammy) Lewis all of Burnside, Kentucky; and
two first cousins, Clarice Upton Dinwiddie of Bowling
Green, Kentucky and Tom Grissom of Frankfort, Kentucky.
The family wishes to
give special thanks to Sharon Reynolds and the Staff at
the Neighborhood of Somerset Nursing Facility for the love
and wonderful care they gave to “Mimi”.
Visitation will be at
Saint Mildred Catholic Church at 12 noon on Saturday,
January 21, 2012. The celebration of Helen’s life will
begin at 1:00 pm at the church with Rev. Michael Ramler
officiating. Burial will follow at Burnside Cemetery.
The family requests
that expressions of sympathy take the form of
contributions to Saint Mildred Outreach.
